The background of this site is dark green. If you see a different colour, it is due to your monitor's colou resolution.

Ferry Lane Estate is in a tucked away location, on the border of Tottenham and Walthamstow and is situated next to the river Lea, the Lea Valley Park, Walthamstow Reservoirs, Wild Bird Sanctuary and copious marshland. Because of our closeness to such vast areas, geographically speaking, we form part of the 'natural' landscape.

The Estate is regarded by many, (council workers included), as the greenest in the borough. Residents are in a position to enjoy a unique relationship with Nature. Unfortunately, it is a relationship that has recently come under threat. The appearance of the Estate is altering, and this will have a detrimental impact on our visiting and resident wildlife. See the Railway Embankment page

Every creature and plant in the website has been spotted here at some time or another. The Railway Embankment area, (by our Senior Citizen residences), is a favourite location for birds and mammals alike. Blue tits and Great tits are really quite bold and perch just inches above residents' street doors. Other birds are much more cautious. Squirrels too, are often seen running across the grass. People sometimes put out nuts for them. Come dusk, and early mornings too, a lone fox can often be seen strolling around.

There is something here for every one of them.

The purpose of this website

  • to further awareness of our wildlife and wildlife habitat(s)
  • to raise the profile of the estate in general
  • to promote an interest and pride among residents
  • to promote the benefits of having our own unspoiled Nature areas, i.e.:
    • relaxation
    • stress relief
    • contemplation, (spiritual and other)
    • peacefulness
    • mind-body benefits
    • education
  • to promote the idea of having Ferry Lane Estate recognised, (by the London Borough of Haringey), as an place worthy of environmental preservation. For example, there is already a Tree Protection Order (T.P.O.) on the mini-Woodland, perhaps it would be possible to have the protection cover a wider area

The curative, gentling power of nature is so evident, be it in the beauty of a flower; a garden, a special plant, or a simple tree.  Sitting in silence with this beauty releases the tension built up over a hectic or frustrating day. Nature's power for gentling us down is an effective antidote to the violence we find in ourselves.

A diversity of environments is important to the human psyche. Opportunities for contemplative recreation in natural settings are essential to many people, if not to all people, of all cultures. Even knowing that such places exist is valuable. In this fast paced, hussle-bussle world, we must save some places for quiet enjoyment. Ferry Lane Estate is very special and we must look after it. Our health, our happiness and our sanity depend on it.
