Has
Joseph inspired your own life
in some way? I would very much
like to hear your story. |
| |
Over
the years, web visitors have
sent me many emails, explaining
how Joseph has, at least in
part, changed their life. The
words typically used are: inspiration,
courage, love, transformation,
peace, understanding and many
more. |

| Memorial
& Virtual Grave |
| Online
Tributes Introduced 5th March 2002
|
| |
The
purpose of the following information is to provide
readers with accurate account of what 'actually'
happened to Joseph after his death, as I have
been asked countless times. In short, there
is no grave for the public to visit. For this
purpose, this virtual graveside is here for
your flowers. You may, or may not, choose to
read on.

You
may find the following disturbing.
|
| |
Joseph's
body was dismembered after his death - in
the name of science. Many tissue samples
were collected and stored (the majority
were preserved in Formaldehyde and later destroyed
during the Blitz). The organs were removed
from his body. Following the Memorial Service,
which was attended by his father (Joseph Rockley
Merrick) and hospital staff, some tissue and
organs were interred. The Service and burial
were arranged by the Whitechapel Hospital.

| |
The
author is very sorry to convey that, absolutely
no records were kept of Joseph's burial location.
So, no one knows where he is. |
| |
Joseph's
skeleton has been preserved for medical advancement
and is on permanent 'private' display at the
Royal London Hospital (UK) Pathological Dept.
|
| |
I
(author) have always assumed that Joseph gave
permission for his body to be dissected and
his skeleton preserved for science. On the 9th
Sept 2002, during a telephone conversation with
Jonathan Evans of the Royal London Hospital
Museum (London, UK), I found out that there
are absolutely no records to confirm he ever
did. Who knows? Could it be that Joseph and
Dr. Treves had 'an understanding'? |
